Driver safety
Hauling is physical work, so safety comes first. Lift heavy items with two people and a dolly, meet in visible places, plan around Fresno‘s summer heat, and turn down anything outside BoxHauls’ limits.
Lifting
- Two people for anything over about 100 lb, and every refrigerator, washer and sleeper sofa.
- Use an appliance dolly for appliances and safes.
- Lift with your legs, keep the load close, and don’t twist while carrying.
- Plan the path first: measure doorways, clear the route, and note the stairs.
Meeting-point safety
- Park legally and in view.
- Confirm the address and the customer’s name before loading.
- If a pickup feels wrong, leave and contact support. [TODO: driver safety support line and in-app reporting]
Heat
From June through September, Fresno regularly tops 100°F. Carry water, take morning jobs when you can, rest in shade between loads, and know the signs of heat exhaustion: dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating.
Weather and the road
Tarp loads when rain is possible. Strap everything, and re-check straps after the first mile and at every stop. Secure loose items so nothing blows out of the bed on the freeway.
What to refuse
- Single items over 1,000 lb, or gun safes over 1,200 lb
- Paint, chemicals, fuel, propane tanks and other hazardous materials
- Live animals
- Anything you can’t secure in your truck
